Mutations et semis

La floraison des camellias peut être sujette à des variations, soit dans la taille (à cause du climat moyen de la période de maturation des boutons), soit dans la couleur (plus ou moins la même que celle du standard, climat, substrat et conditions de culture entrant en ligne de compte).

Il existe aussi un phénomène courant, appelé "mutation". Une ou plusieurs parties de la plante présentent des caractéristiques tout à fait différentes de l'original : ce peut être la couleur, radicalement différente du standard (un rouge devient blanc, ou panaché, etc.) ou la forme. La cause peut-être naturelle, en dehors de toute pollinisation ou intervention humaine, mais aussi virale. Si on reproduit cette partie "nouvelle", on peut créer un nouveau camellia.

Il existe des sortes de "lignées", d'une mutation à l'autre. Nous avons enrichi la nomenclature de liens d'un camellia "mutant" vers son ancêtre.

Il faut noter que ce phénomène est tout à fait aléatoire. On sait que certains camellias sont très instables, d'autres moins. Nombre de cultivars ont ainsi été obtenus.

On fait aussi des semis à partir de graines récoltées sur un camellia. Le résultat est aussi tout à fait aléatoire. On peut obtenir un nouveau camellia, issu de ce semis.
